The Poconos
Big Pocono State Park
Big Pocono State Park is a rugged and mountainous 1,306 acres stretched across Camelback Mountain. If you climb Camelback, you can see to New York and New Jersey, as well as a significant portion of eastern Pennsylvania. If you don't care to hike, there's a loop road around the summit of Camelback Mountain, which will offer you 360 degrees of panoramic views. There are three hiking trails here, one of which is designated as a dual-purpose hiking and horseback riding trail. Watch your step!
About 800 acres of Big Pocono State Park are open to hunting and trapping and the training of dogs during the appropriate seasons. If you use the park during hunting season, make sure you wear bright orange, like the hunters do.
Big Pocono State Park shares Camelback Mountain with Camelback Ski Corporation. Camelback Mountain is the best skiing in the Poconos, according to some skiiers. There are thirty three trails and thirteen ski lifts, night skiing and snow making. Skiiers from all over the Northeast make regular weekend trips here.
Camelback Restaurant is operated by the Corporation, offering good food for hungry park visitors. You can drive there or ride the lift.
To get to State Park, take exit 299 from I-80 in Tannersville. It's on PA highway 715.
