The Poconos
Hickory Run State Park
This is yet another state park located in the Poconos, this time in the southwestern corner. There is something to behold here: a field of boulders! The field of boulders has been designated a National Natural Landmark. There's good trout fishing here, in a stream that runs amongst glacier-created boulder mountains. There are over forty miles of hiking trails in here, spread across 15,000 acres total in the park. Bring your tent, because there's camping here too, at the campground which has accommodations for tents, with toilets, showers, and electricity. There's even a little camp store where you can purchase essentials that you may have forgotten while packing for your Poconos camping advanture among giant boulders.
Go swimming at the beach, which is open all summer long, or take a picnic on one of hundreds of picnic tables in the park. The park really is big!
History buffs, there are "ruins" to explore, as this park was once the site for saw mills and their accompanying dams, whose remains lay untouched after all these years. There are thick forests here, made of hemlock and pine, where colonial settlers lost their lives after getting lost while fleeing American Indians during wars like the Civil War.
As you might guess, the thick forests meant the area was also known for lumbering in the 1800s. Unfortunately, and as is the case in so many northeast regions, the area was denuded quickly before the start of the twentieth century.
Hunters and anglers are welcome to practie their hobbies here in Hickory Run State Park, as are snowmobilers in winter. You can also have fun doing other, less instrusive winter activities such as ice-skating, cross-country skiing and sledding here, as the park is open all year to the public. to get here, take I-80 and get off on exit 41 and drive towards Hickory Run on route 534.
