The Poconos
A glance through some bridal magazines might leave vacationers with the impression that
The Poconos Mountains area is a haven for honeymooners and that’s all.
That just simply is not true. While it is a popular destination for many newlyweds,
it is a great vacation spot for the entire family or a great place to host a
business convention.
The Poconos Mountains region is located in northeast Pennsylvania, about 30
miles north of Allentown, Pennsylvania. While visitors from all over the world
come to the mountains, The Poconos are popular among locals and regional visitors,
too. Small towns dot the region but you won’t find a large city in the
mountain region.
The Poconos Mountains feature the beauty one would normally associate with mountains
and the northeastern part of the United States, but The Poconos also have a
total of 150 lakes, 18 waterfalls, and approximately 170 miles of river flowing
through it. The Delaware River flows through the mountains - which is how the
area derived its name. “Poconos” - is a Native American word which
when translated it means “stream between two mountains.”
The mountainous area is home to seven state parks, including the Delaware Water
Gap National Recreation Area. The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area
totals 70,000 acres. There are 72,000 acres of state forests among The Poconos
Mountains, too. Amidst the natural beauty of the lakes and mountains, The Poconos
Mountains visitor will find plenty of options in accommodations, events, and
attractions no matter what time of year he or she plans to visit.
The Poconos Mountains also have great shopping excursions for shopaholics and
interesting historical tours for history buffs. There really is something for
everyone all throughout the year. Winter months bring great opportunities for
those who like to snow ski while the summer months offer a break from hotter
temperatures and a chance to enjoy a variety of water activities too.
The first vacationers visited The Poconos Mountains back in the 1800s. From
then, word spread rather quickly about the area’s year around beauty and
local and regional tourists from Pennsylvania and New York began pouring in.
Now, The Poconos Mountains are not limited to just local and regional tourists.
Visitors come from all over the world to experience the beauty, excitement and
fun of The Poconos Mountains. Make sure to consider The Poconos for your next
family vacation. You will be glad you did!
