The Poconos
Lehigh Gorge State Park

Come to Lehigh Gorge State Park and witness steep cliffs, whitewater rafting, and rocks everywhere. Bring your camera, because this is one very scenic state park. Located in the Poconos, this is where advanced and fearless whitewater rafters come to feel the thrill. If you're a novice, stay ashore and watch. The section of the Lehigh River that runs through Lehigh Gorge State Park is rough and ready to challenge any rafter, conoer, kayaker, or boater. If you're a novice but really really want to raft this section of the river, then go with an experienced guide, of which there are many to choose from in the Poconos region. Best time to raft is Spring through early summer, when the Spring runoff is at its peak and raging down the mountain. The actual white water is created by dam releases further upstream, but there are more of them in Spring because of the natural melting process. You can get a schedule of the dam releases, which are controlled by the Army Corps of Engineers, operating out of the Francis E. Walter Dam.

You can also go hunting or fishing in Lehigh Gorge State Park, and you can even trap. In fact, they try to keep the rafters off the section of river between the Francis E. Walter Dam and White Haven, so as to promote fishing in that area. There are over 4500 acres of park here, so hiking and bicylcling are superb here, with old abandoned roads and trails. Mountain bikers will like the old abandoned railroad grade. In winter, cross-country skiiers will appreciate that same railroad grade, so whatever outdoor acivity you enjoy, chances are you'll find lots to do here any time of year.

To get here, take I-80 and get off on exit 40 in the town of White Haven.
