The Poconos
Upper Delaware Scenic & Recreational River
This is a protected stretch of the Delaware River in the Poconos that covers the waters from the Delaware Water Gap, northward to the town of Hancock in New York State. It's seventy three miles long, and the river changes throughout the Poconos area. The fishing here is excellent, there are some areas that are pretty good for rafting, and bird watching is great. Land along the 73 miles is mostly privately owned, but there are some private campgrounds and canoe or kayak rental companies along the way. Sometimes you can ask permission to camp in other areas, as well. It's maintained by the National Park Service, and there are some Boy Scout areas in there, called Ten Mile Scout Camps.
If driving, you can get a good view of the river if you drive along New York Highway 97. You'll see historic building along the way, as well as remnants of the old canal system, which took goods in and out of the Poconos region. Make pit stops at Roebling's Aqueduct and the Zane Grey Museum. Roebling's Aqueduct is the oldest existing wire suspension bridge in the country right now. The Zane Grey Museum honors the popular writer of western novels, and is housed in his former home.
